AmperlyEV ("we," "our," or "us") operates the website at amperlyev.com and the AmperlyEV web application (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Service.
By using AmperlyEV, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
2. Information We Collect
Information You Provide
- Account information: Email address, display name
- Vehicle information: Year, make, model, trim, VIN (optional)
- Charging situation: Home charger type, zip code
- Charging sessions: Manually logged charging data (date, kWh, cost, location)
- Community content: Questions, answers, and comments you post
- Station ratings: Ratings and comments on charging stations
- Cost preferences: Electricity rate, gas price, gas car MPG for cost comparisons
Information Collected via Smartcar (with your explicit consent)
If you choose to connect your vehicle via Smartcar, we collect:
- Battery level (state of charge percentage)
- Estimated range
- Charging status (charging, not charging, fully charged)
- Odometer reading
- Vehicle location (latitude/longitude)
This data is collected every 5 minutes when your vehicle is connected. You can disconnect your vehicle at any time in Settings, which immediately stops all data collection from your vehicle.
Information from Third-Party Sources
- NHTSA: Vehicle specifications and recall information based on your VIN or vehicle model
- Smartcar: Vehicle telematics data (as described above, with your OAuth consent)
Information Collected Automatically
- Usage data: Pages visited, features used (via Vercel Analytics — no personal identifiers)
- Geolocation: Approximate location via browser geolocation API (only when you grant permission, used for charging map and trip planning)
- Cookies and local storage: Authentication tokens, theme preference, trip planner settings
3. How We Use Your Information
- Provide, operate, and maintain the Service
- Personalize your experience (vehicle-specific guides, AI responses, trip planning)
- Track charging costs and calculate EV vs. gas savings
- Estimate battery health from charging patterns
- Send transactional emails (magic link login, charge completion notifications)
- Send optional weekly digest emails (you can opt out in Settings)
- Enable community features (Q&A, station ratings)
- Process payments via Stripe for Pro subscriptions
- Improve the Service based on usage patterns (Vercel Analytics)
- Detect and prevent abuse (rate limiting, spam detection, user banning)
- Comply with legal obligations
4. AI Assistant
Our AI assistant uses your vehicle information, charging history, and battery health data to provide personalized advice. Your conversations are processed by Anthropic's Claude API. We send the following context to the AI:
- Your vehicle specs (year, make, model, battery size, connector type)
- Your charging situation (home charger type, zip code)
- Aggregated charging statistics (last 90 days: session count, kWh, cost)
- Estimated battery health (SOH percentage)
We do not send your email, name, or other personally identifiable information to the AI. Conversation history is stored in our database to enable multi-turn conversations.
5. Third-Party Services
We share data with these third-party services to operate AmperlyEV:

We do not sell your personal information to any third party. We do not serve advertisements or share data with advertising networks.
6. Data Retention
- Account data is retained as long as your account is active
- Charging sessions and vehicle history are retained as long as your account is active
- AI conversation history is retained as long as your account is active (you can delete individual conversations)
- Community posts remain visible after account deletion (attributed to "Deleted User")
- When you delete your account, all personal data is permanently removed within 30 days
7. Data Security
We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your data:
- All data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest (Supabase encryption)
- Smartcar tokens are encrypted using AES-256-GCM before storage
- We never store payment card information (handled entirely by Stripe)
- Row-level security policies ensure users can only access their own data
- Passwordless authentication (magic links) eliminates password-related vulnerabilities
- API rate limiting and abuse detection protect against unauthorized access
- Security headers (CSP, HSTS, X-Frame-Options) protect against common web attacks
No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access: View all data we have about you (available in your dashboard and Settings)
- Correct: Update your profile, vehicle, and preferences in Settings
- Delete: Permanently delete your account and all associated data (Settings → Danger Zone)
- Disconnect: Revoke Smartcar access at any time (Settings → Connected Car)
- Opt out: Disable weekly digest emails and push notifications in Settings
- Export: Request a copy of your data by contacting us
9. California Residents (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act:
- Right to know what personal information we collect and how it is used
- Right to delete your personal information
- Right to opt out of the sale of personal information (we do not sell your data)
- Right to non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights
10. Children's Privacy
AmperlyEV is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
